LIFE SKILL FOUNDATION OF SRI LANKA
A step beyond self-help
The Sri Lankan society has been affiliated with the high degree of violence at present time. The grave nature of the increase of crimes are exemplified by the number of incidence of rapes which has increased up to 1253 in year 2002 from 540 in year 1996. Likewise number of murders and homicides have increased from 900 in year 1996 up to 1289 in year 2002.Accoding to police about 10000 serious crimes are taking place annually. Also about 6000 cases of suicide deaths are reported annually and majority is young people in between 15 to 40.
Destructive youth behavior such as smoking, drinking and unprotected sexual activities are on the increase. Schools and colleges serve as the building blocks of an individual life and can play a vital role in preventing such activities. Building value systems, setting acceptable individual aspirations and inculcating appropriate goal-setting mechanisms are of prime importance for preventing suicides in the younger age groups
Southeast Asian countries strongly adopt and follow traditional wisdom and solutions. Life-skills education combined with a problem-solving approach can equip young people to cope with and handle the problems of life in an optimistic and realistic manner
"Life Skills are not hereditary, they must be taught" No one is born with an understanding of what society expects from us. This know-how, what we call life management skills, must be taught, understood and embraced. At-risk youth -- and today what youth is at risk? -- must consciously be provided with the skills necessary to become productive members of our society. These pro-social skills cannot be learned on the street, bought at the local convenience store or checked out of a library -- they must be observed and taught. Life-skills lessons lay the foundation for disadvantaged youth to develop positive social & emotional skills.
We connect people with critical thinking and self-management skills to help them meet the everyday stressors of life; with family, at work, in health, relations and re-entry back into society.
The primary objective of our program is to train, coach, and motivate people to change their life-styles and develop positive attitudes, behaviors, and habits that can be applied in real life situations.
We utilize a "PUT" theory to measure success, which is based upon the learner's ability to use new behaviors in their daily life-styles :
PRACTICE the skills as individuals, in a group or team environment.
USE the skills in the development of their professional and personal lives.
TEACH the skills to others.
Why self-esteem is so important?
The problem is no longer the germ of diphtheria, but rather the attitudes of parents and teachers who are incapable of accepting and using proven knowledge...
We are what we think we can be.
